Forest Management and Tree-Ring Isotopes

چکیده

Abstract Forest management can be improved by the mechanistic understanding that tree-ring stable isotopes provide. Key tools include genetic selection, competing vegetation control, thinning, and fertilization. These frequently change environmental conditions physiological processes, such as photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, water uptake, nitrogen cycling, which may leave isotopic signatures in tree-rings, providing detailed responses to over decadal time periods. While data sets remain small, some trends have emerged from previous forest studies using isotopes. Genotype selection sometimes shows evidence of maladaptation, especially presence climate change. Competition control thinning different reactions depending on dryness site; they generally obtain whether competition is primarily for aboveground (light) or belowground (water nutrient) resources. Fertilization recorded tree rings appear driven initial increases later leaf area index. Tree-ring applications provide key insights a much broader range silvicultural objectives than included here, we encourage their application large-scale experiments reduce uncertainties explain mechanisms response. In future work, suggest wishing utilize analysis ancillary measurements, concentrations, leaf-area index, xylemwater sources, canopy temperature, help support interpretation data.

Pooled versus separate measurements of tree-ring stable isotopes.

δ(13)C and δ(18)O of tree rings contain time integrated information about the environmental conditions weighted by seasonal growth dynamics and are well established as sources of palaeoclimatic and ecophysiological data. Annually resolved isotope chronologies are frequently produced by pooling dated growth rings from several trees prior to the isotopic analyses. This procedure has the advantage...

Uniform climate sensitivity in tree-ring stable isotopes across species and sites in a mid-latitude temperate forest.

Tree-ring stable isotopes, providing insight into drought-induced eco-physiological mechanisms, are frequently used to reconstruct past changes in growing season temperature and precipitation. Their climatic response is, however, still not fully understood, particularly for data originating from non-extreme, mid-latitude environments with differing ecological conditions. Here, we assess the res...

Soil and Tree Ring Chemistry Changes in an Oak Forest

Changes in soil chemistry due to historic large-scale disturbances, e.g. pollution inputs, storm damage, and logging, have previously been shown to cause similar changes in the nutrient concentrations found in tree rings. Repeated soil sampling in a reference watershed at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory (Otto, NC) in 1970, 1990, and 2004 showed significant decreases in cation concentrations a...

Tree Growth, Forest Management, and Their Implications for Wood Quality

Oregon State University • University of Idaho • Washington State University Wood has long served as one of our most versatile and heavily used raw materials. From it we derive solid wood for structural and ornamental applications, composite products in the forms of panels and beams, numerous paper products, chemicals, fuel—the list could go on and on. Foresters have worked for many years to inc...
